After humility, as we bow our headsaccept our limitations completely, which leads us into agreeing with God aboutourselves and life fully. This is the act of Confession, agreeing with God. Itis also the essence of our communication with God, expressing how we seek tosee what God sees. Confession isn’t just agreeing with God about what’s beenwrong in our lives. It is expressing awareness to God of what is true. Thismight be the beauty of a night’s sky, or that the value of others is crucial toliving life well. Confession is when we give up excuses, hesitations, assumptions or even control and simply agree to what is deeply and plainlytrue… good or bad… in ourselves or in the world. Confession is the doorway intowisdom. We admit to what is not a fact within our resentments or perspectives(toward others or ourselves) but is, instead, our assumption or overstatementor bias, even bigotry.
Confession is where theself-created chain that links us to our past thoughts, attitudes or actions ishanded over to God, so that he can take it apart and remove it from us and leadus into the future. Confession is where we allow wisdom and love to guide ourparticipation in life with others. And it’s where we learn that God’s love isnot deserved for being good or doing well. His love is not deserved. It is justgiven… eternally. And we also learn that we and others are still loved when wefeel most undeserving.
In confession, we give up controland we can discover that God was never in control. God does not control. Goddoesn’t demand or require. God gives. God gives all resources, allopportunities, everything we need to live and it is life that God calls us. Consider that God doesn’t call us toobedience but to wisdom, to living life with him teaching us how to live, howto make our choices, how to change and to grow. If this is true, what we’vecalled God’s commandments are instructions on how to live
wisely. When we follow God’s instructions we walk in wisdomand in love.
Prayer: Living Lord, heal my soul with the ointment of your grace. As I bow my head, I bow my heartto your love, to live beneath its authority. Teach my heart the authority thatis found only in truth, the authority of the light that reduces darkness simplyby its presence. I want to acknowledge that it alone has authority in my life,so that I can invest my whole self in your kingdom here. Amen.
